At the World Bank’s 2025 Spring Meetings, the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, highlighted a truth that is all too often overlooked: the African diaspora is not separate from the continent’s destiny. It is an essential part of it. And that changes everything.

A fresh perspective on diaspora engagement

For too long, the contribution of African diasporas has been reduced to remittances, one-off donations or nostalgic returns home for holidays. This view, whilst appreciative, confines the diaspora to a passive, almost humanitarian, supporting role.

But Africa today — and even more so the Africa of tomorrow — needs strategic allies, not benefactors.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala proposes a different path: that of a diaspora as an agent of change, bringing expertise, capital, networks and ideas. A connected diaspora that does not merely observe but participates, invests and builds.

“The African diaspora must see itself as part of the solution – not merely as a bystander or donor, but as a key player in the process of development.”
– Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the WTO

The Congo at the heart of the issues

Let’s take the Congo as an example. With its resources, its young population, and its agricultural and energy potential, the country is at a turning point. But to transform this potential into tangible and sustainable development, more is needed than just government projects: it requires the mobilisation of all its dynamic forces, including those based abroad.

And this is where the Congolese diaspora has a decisive role to play.
Whether you are an engineer, entrepreneur, student, communications professional, teacher, researcher, investor or artist, your journey can have a direct impact on the country’s future.

In practical terms, what role will you play?

Committing yourself doesn’t necessarily mean giving up everything to go back. It can start with:

  • Share expertise through mentoring programmes or online workshops.
  • Invest in local projects, SMEs or innovative cooperatives.
  • Build bridges between institutions abroad and local initiatives.
  • Produce content, share positive stories, and showcase Congolese talent.
  • Network with Congolese people in the diaspora to build a strong and credible collective force.

And what about you? Where do you stand?

At Diaspat, we believe that every member of the diaspora can be a catalyst for change, regardless of where they are or what field they work in.

So we ask you this question:

👉 Do you think your career, your business or your education is part of the Congo’s future?
👉 What’s holding you back? What inspires you?
