Living in Kinshasa? Accept this non-negotiable rule: traffic rules everything
Binja B.
Living in Kinshasa isn’t just about adapting to a new culture or a new way of life...
It means accepting an inescapable truth: traffic dictates your daily life. In the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, traffic jams are not the exception but the norm, shaping work, social life and even housing choices.
Kinshasa is one of Africa’s largest cities, with a dense population and a limited road network. Much of the road network is unpaved, which makes getting around extremely difficult, especially during the rainy season. Within minutes, some roads become impassable, turning a simple journey into a veritable urban expedition.
Having a suitable vehicle, ideally a 4×4, is often recommended. Although some city cars cope well in dry weather, they quickly reach their limits.
Another point to note is that foreign driving licences are not recognised in the DRC. Fortunately, obtaining a local licence is relatively simple, quick and straightforward, with no formal test required. Despite this, many expats and executives opt for a more stress-free solution: hiring a driver. This choice reduces stress, improves safety and makes it easier to navigate Kinshasa’s sometimes chaotic traffic.
Here, distances can be deceptive. A five-kilometre journey can take two hours during rush hour. This is why most residents organise their lives within a small area: home, office, schools and leisure activities should ideally be close to one another.
In Kinshasa, understanding and anticipating traffic is not just a logistical detail. It is the key to saving your energy, time and quality of life.
