RETURN HOME
Congolese, but born abroad: you’ll face culture shock too if you decide to return home
You were born abroad, but your roots run deep in the DRC. The idea of returning to the DRC, of reuniting with family, friends and your culture, is a dream come true. However, even if you know the country from occasional visits or stories told by your loved ones, the reverse culture shock can be much more intense than you might expect.
After years spent abroad, your daily routines, the way you manage your time and your expectations of social life will have changed. On your return, simple aspects of life in Kinshasa or other major Congolese cities may seem surprising, or even disconcerting. Chaotic traffic, bureaucracy that can be slow at times, power cuts, or payment methods that are still largely cash-based can create a real disconnect from what you were used to abroad.
Even social interactions can be a challenge. Etiquette, ways of greeting people, or even how to hold a conversation may differ from what you’ve learnt. Your friends or family may also perceive you differently, and it will take some time to find your place within your community again. Returnees often speak of this feeling of being a stranger in one’s own country—a feeling that fades with time and adaptation.
To ensure a successful return, it is essential to:
- Prepare yourself mentally: find out about recent changes in daily life in the DRC, infrastructure, the property market and services.
- Embrace flexibility: life in the Congo requires patience and the ability to adapt. The unexpected is common and part of everyday life.
- Gradually reconnect with the culture: the language, traditions, cuisine, and even social interactions sometimes require learning or relearning.
- Rely on a community: joining expat or returnee groups can facilitate integration and offer valuable support.
Returning to the Congo is a unique and deeply enriching experience. Reverse culture shock is a real phenomenon, even for those who feel ‘at home’. But with preparation, patience and an open mind, your return can become an adventure full of discoveries, reunions and unforgettable moments.
