RETURN HOME
This neighbourhood in Kinshasa is home to almost the entire expatriate community (and that’s no coincidence)
Moving to Kinshasa as an expatriate or returnee is not something that can be done on the spur of the moment. Choosing the right neighbourhood is one of the most strategic decisions for a successful expatriate experience in the DRC. And one name crops up almost without fail in online searches: Gombe.
Located in the heart of the Congolese capital, Gombe is the nerve centre of economic, diplomatic and social life. It is here that embassies, international organisations, corporate headquarters and the majority of international schools are concentrated – a key factor for expatriate families. There are also supermarkets meeting international standards, popular restaurants, cinemas, gyms and private medical services.
When it comes to accommodation, it is worth noting that flats and houses in Kinshasa are rarely furnished. Expatriates who can do so often choose to bring their own furniture with them. Otherwise, well-known retailers such as ORCA allow you to furnish your home locally. Families tend to prefer secure compounds, also known as concessions. The most famous, UTEX, is a veritable city within a city: enhanced security, green spaces, on-site amenities and an international community. However, this level of comfort comes at a high price, making it one of the most expensive neighbourhoods in Kinshasa.
Moving away from Gombe to reduce your rent may seem sensible, but the reality of traffic in Kinshasa quickly changes the picture. Traffic jams can turn a journey of just a few kilometres into a journey lasting several hours. In the DRC, quality of life often depends more on the location of your home than on its size.
Choosing the right neighbourhood in Kinshasa means saving time, reducing stress and settling in successfully as an expatriate. For many, Gombe remains a logical choice, almost unavoidable.
